Calculated Harmony

Which RAL colours fit harmoniously to another colour?

Apart from the fact that the response to this question depends strongly on subjective feeling, there are nevertheless certain rules which are generally recognized (which finds it’s match in the program „Visual Color Mood).

This program determines based on these rules the following colour harmonies and variations. They are introduced respectively on further pages of this help system.

Kurzanleitung

  1. Start „Color harmony“ via the RAL C1 DIGITAL toolbox.
  2. Choose the colour stock from which the original colour will be selected or enter your own colour values.
  3. Choose the wanted harmony calculation/s.
  4. Specify whether the result shall be calculated in a RAL system or in CIELAB.
  5. Select the number of calculated harmonic colours.
  6. The original colour and it’s harmonic counterparts are displayed now. The respective Delta E value of a RAL colour result is based on the CIELAB distance of that RAL colour to the ideal harmonic CIELAB colour of the original colour (it is not the distance to the original colour).

Calculation based on CIELAB

The harmonies are calculated inside the CIELAB colour space. The CIELAB model conforms by far better with our eyes than for example RGB. Even if the CIELAB model has it's own weaknesses it is by far better than the otherwise used HSV- or HSL model. In other words: colour harmonies which are calculated using RAL C1 DIGITAL are more harmonic than the calculated colour harmonies of other software products.
